2月19日（水）、外務省国際協力局首席事務官の植田達也氏をお招きし、「日本の開発協力」と題して日本が行っている開発協力・支援に関する講演が行われました。

日本の支援の特徴として、長期的や視野をもって支援していること、途上国の自助努力の後押しをする形であること、弱い立場の人々の保護と能力の強化を目指していることなどが挙げられました。

日本は終戦後、世界銀行をはじめとした様々な支援のおかげで、経済発展を成し遂げ、支援される側から支援する側へと変貌を遂げました。現在、日本が広く支援活動を行っている理由は、その恩返しというだけでなく、海外に資源やエネルギーなど多くを依存する日本にとって、世界の安定成長が必要不可欠であり、自分たちのためでもあるという点が強調されました。

最後に、開発協力は政府だけの仕事ではなく、だれでも参加できる、身近な取り組みであるので、政府開発援助（ODA）に対する興味・関心をさらに深めてほしいというメッセージが伝えられました。

On Wednesday, February 19, Mr. Tatsuya Ueda, Chief Secretary of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was invited to give a lecture entitled “Japan’s Development Cooperation” on Japan’s development cooperation and support.

He explained how the characteristics of Japan’s assistance include long-term and perspective support, support for developing countries’ self-help efforts, and the aim of protecting vulnerable people and strengthening their capabilities.

After the end of World War Ⅱ, Japan achieved economic development thanks to support from various sources, including the World Bank. Japan transitioned from receiving assistance to providing assistance. The reason why Japan is currently conducting widespread support activities is not only to give back, but also for Japan, which relies on a lot of resources and energy from overseas.  Mr. Ueda emphasized that assistance is essential for the stable growth of the world including Japan itself.

Mr. Ueda concluded with the message that development cooperation is not only a job of the government, but a public initiative that anyone can participate in, so that interest in ODA is deepened.
