What I Learned About LGBT
YUTOKU Mikiko
I would like to make a presentation about LGBT. I started to think about LGBT recently. At my school, Meiji Gakuen in Fukuoka Prefecture, we have some special classes several times a year. They consist of lectures by Dr. Creaser, who is an associate professor at the University of Kitakyushu. In one of the classes she asked us,
“Why is it important to understand LGBT?”
The answer seems to be easy at first glance. We said,
“We are different from each other. It is natural to accept everyone’s personality.”
However, reality is not that simple. When I tried asking my mother,
“If I should love a girl, how would you feel?”
She stared at me and said,
“I have no choice but to accept it. But I still hope that you don’t get married to her.”
I am not a lesbian, but I can imagine their sorrow from this experience.
In 2015, for the first time, a public referendum about the recognition of same sex marriage was held in Ireland. Sixty-two percent of the voters voted for accepting it. The result shows their high interest and tolerance on this problem. Not only Ireland but also many countries around the world have begun to make the law which allows same sex marriage.
How about Japan? I think that we have not strictly oppressed homosexual like Western countries in history, but we still do not have enough interest in LGBT. Homosexuality is legal in Japan, but issues related to their relationship such as transfer of property are not recognized legally.
I must say to you that we can change this situation. We should give small children more opportunities to think about this problem. They are pure enough to accept things as they are even if the issues make adults confused. And we will be able to make a generation with no gender discrimination in the future. Of course, we should be such a generation first to set a good example.
It is important to understand and respect each other whether or not they are LGBT. I believe that there is no difference between an LGBT person and me at the point where we love others as precious people.
Our Special Class: Global Career Education
MURAYAMA Kotone
We have a class called Global Career Education. The class has guest speakers from outside school. The guest speakers tell us the way to live in the global community in the future. In this class we have an advantage because we can get information about various professions. Besides, we can know correctly what global community is like by listening to their experiences. The guest speakers say with their voice that it is important to have strong will in ourselves.
I am always impressed by their lectures. I am very lucky to be able to listen to such lectures. Also, the teacher in charge of this class said,
“You are lucky! I am envious of you.”
Above all, I was impressed by one particular lecture. Mr. Tonshin, a student from China studying at Kyushu University, talked about what a student life in a foreign country is like. Through his lecture, I learned it makes us grow and stronger when put in a hard environment.
It will certainly be global community when we become adults. Making use of things we get from Global Career Education, I want to be a cosmopolitan who plays an active part in the world.
